In this post, learn about all the photography gear I use as a travel and landscape photographer. I get asked a lot about what my camera setup is, so I’ve compiled all that information in this post to share with you along with some other recommendations!

CAMERA BODY

Sony A7RIII

I currently shoot with a Sony A7RIII. Prior to the summer of 2020, I shot with a Nikon D5000 that I had used since 2009! The Nikon D5000 was a great beginner camera for me to really learn more about photography and how to use manual settings. I’m a strong believer that the best camera is the one you have, but I’ve really enjoyed working with an upgraded camera. The Sony A7RIII is a mirrorless digital camera and it is such a powerhouse with a 42mp sensor, which allows for large prints or zoomed-in crops. I love how powerful it is but still lightweight.

Additional Camera Body Recommendations:

Some great beginner cameras I recommend are the Sony a6000 series, the Nikon D3500, and the Nikon D5600. If you’re looking for something a bit more budget-friendly than the Sony A7RIII, then I recommend the Sony A7III which is also a great mirrorless camera at a lower price.

LENSES

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for Sony E

Currently, this is the lens I use 80% of the time. It is such a versatile lens that is great for both portrait and landscape photography. I really love using this lens for all types of travel photography.

Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 for Sony E

This lens is perfect for capturing wide, expansive landscapes. It allows you to fit more into your frame when needed. I’ve been using this lens more and more in 2021 because I’ve been spending a lot of time in the mountains capturing wide mountain vistas.

ACCESSORIES

Tripod

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod

I love how lightweight this tripod is, weighing in at only 2.8 lbs. This tripod is perfect for taking on hiking trips and folds up small enough to fit in the side pocket of a daypack. If you’re okay with a bit of additional weight, the aluminum version of the Peak Design Travel Tripod is a bit cheaper. A more budget-friendly tripod I’ve used in the past is the MEFOTO BackPacker Classic Aluminum Tripod.

FILTER

Polar Pro Circular Polarizer Filter | Quartzline

This polarizer has been essential to my photography when I need to eliminate glares, reflections, or haze from a landscape. I use my polarizer primarily when shooting landscapes with lakes and have never regretted having it with me. This polarizer was key when I hiked the John Muir Trail in August 2021 - there were so many lakes to photograph and this really helped capture their beauty without the glare and reflection!

CAMERA BAG CLIP

Peak Design Capture Camera Clip

I’ve been using the Peak Design Capture Camera Clip for more than two years and it has been one of my favorite accessories to use while hiking. The Capture Clip clips onto your bag strap, allowing quick and easy access to your camera while out on adventures.

MEMORY CARDS

SanDisk 128GB Extreme SDXC

This is my go-to memory card. I love how fast these memory cards are and that they are built to withstand adverse weather conditions.

CAMERA STRAP

Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap

The Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap is a recent addition to my accessory kit. I don’t always want or need to use my camera strap, so this allows me to easily remove and reattach my camera strap.

L-BRACKET

SUNWAYFOTO PSL-a7RIII Dedicated L Plate L-Bracket for Sony Alpha A7III, A7MIII and A7RIII

This L-Bracket allows me to attach my camera to my tripod vertically which is great for when I want to take portrait-orientation photos with my tripod. I use this a lot when taking self-portraits or vertical videos.

CAMERA BAG

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Zip 15L

The Peak Design Everyday Backpack Zip 15L is another recent addition to my camera gear setup, but I’m loving it already. I love using this bag for more casual or shorter adventures to carry my camera gear. My tripod fits perfectly into the side pocket and there is enough room in my bag for my camera, both lenses, snacks, and an extra jacket. What I really like about it is that there are a lot of pockets on the inside, which is perfect for carrying extra batteries, lens cloth, etc. The side zip is also super handy for quickly pulling out my camera.

Save for later!
